Indoor bicycle trainers are not one-size-fits-all. Every rider has their own preference for how to bring their ride inside. Here we've lined-up our smart and basic stationary bike trainers for a side-by-side comparison of features.

What's a Smart Bike Trainer?

A smart bike trainer is an indoor bicycle trainer that utilizes technology to control the trainer's resistance during a workout.

The "smart" designation stems from the same concept that turned your old flip phone into a "smart" one: technology. Virtual training programs such as CycleOps VirtualTraining, Zwift and TrainerRoad are some of the most used applications with smart bike trainers. Additionally, most smart trainers provide power data and also answer to the name "virtual trainer."

What's a Basic Bike Trainer?

A basic bike trainer is an indoor bicycle trainer that relies on a resistance curve paired with a resistance unit to simulate riding a bike indoors.

For riders not ready to invest in a smart trainer, a basic trainer is a great place to start. Plus, a basic trainer can be made compatible with virtual training programs by adding a cycling power meter or a speed/cadence sensor to the bicycle.
