Training and Racing

What are your most important power training metrics?

I train by watts. A watt is a watt is a watt! I use to train with heart rate but I found that ranges so much, usually based on how many espresso shots I have had that day, but power is just so simple and straight forward. My coach tells me how many watts I have to hold for how many minutes and it's that simple!

What are you pre-event rituals?

Ha! Wish I had some. When I was a horseback rider I use to always wear the same “lucky” underwear. Now I think I just try to remember I'm not curing cancer so just to go out there and have fun and go as hard as I can!

What are your must-haves on race day?

My PowerTap, a LUNA white chocolate macadamia nut bar, chamois butter and Coca- Cola!

What is your favorite pre-event meal?

Well I'm gluten intolerant so it's not exciting! Some rice pasta with veggies and chicken. Ice cream for dessert of course!

What is your favorite post-event meal?

To be honest I usually don't feel like eating after an event. I always think about what I want to eat while I am racing but that burger with fries and a banana split never seem as appetizing when I have finished

What is your greatest achievement/proudest moment in your sport?

Either setting the World's fastest Ironman bike split at Ironman Florida in 2008 or winning Ironman Coeur' d'Alene. It's a toss up but both felt so good!

What is your favorite race?

Ironman Hawaii. You never know what is going to happen on that island. It's such a mysterious place and always throws something at you that you aren't expecting. Like the year my bike seat fell off at mile 70 and I had to ride out of the saddle for 20 miles!

For Fun

What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

I feel like I am still growing up and I still love the Simpsons and the Family Guy! I can't believe they makes these shows for kids, I love them!

What is your favorite training song?

It depends on my mood. Sometimes when I have to get down to it, it's Eminem's ‘Till I Collapse or Lose Yourself and other days it's more trance stuff like Pjanoo by Eric Prydz.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Bad top 40 Music (I even have a guilty pleasure playlist-think rihanna, pink, lady gaga), Rap music and Ice Cream!

What do you do when you're not training?

I have a full time job owning and running a Pet wash, Boutique and dog sitting service called WAGS, in San Francisco with my husband Johnny

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Didn't everyone want to be President?

We’ve all heard the phrase “Winning isn’t everything” a million times but never did it have more profound meaning for me than last week at Lake Steven 70.3. I’ll start by saying this is not a typical race report – one in which I recount the highs and lows of my swim/bike/run, talk about things I would like to improve or thank all of my wonderful sponsors. This is a reminder of how you need to live your life with intention every single day because it can all be gone in an instant. As James Dean famously said, “Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today.”

TyStewartPeople ask me all the time, “How do you do it?” The funny thing is that they aren’t asking me how I swim 2.4 miles, followed by a 112-mile bike, followed by a 26.2-mile marathon. Yes, I am a professional triathlete and a professional cyclist but most people aren’t that curious about that. People are curious about how I train for those things while I also work 60-80 hours a week owning and running my own pet care business in San Francisco with my husband, called WAGS.

I am a very busy person. But in my mind so are most people. Life is a juggling act, and everyone has all these balls up in the air at the same time. For me my juggling act is between Wags, training, real estate management, my husband Johnny, my family and friends, and teaching cycling. It’s a lot, but the stay-at-home mom has her own balls she is juggling too. Hers are most likely the kids, the household, the finances, and the cooking to name a few.

So when people ask me “how do you do it?” I tell them it’s not simple, but it is possible! Here are a few things that help me maximize the time I have to be a competitive athlete while being a wife, business owner, teacher, and real estate owner.

Riding with Power down the California Coast—San Francisco to Santa Barbara!

DAY 1: It’s Saturday and I am thrilled that I will be spending 9 hours riding my bike down the coast of California from San Francisco’s GG Bridge to Monterey. Some might call me crazy but in reality most Saturday’s I spend teaching my 2 hour ecycling class at Endurance PTC in Mill Valley and then running to my shop to wash filthy sand ridden canines all day. It’s an easier day to ride my bike for 9 hours than to yell motivating phrases at my class and chase around wet dogs all day long. I am thrilled!
