Athlete Q and A

What are your most important power training metrics?

During a ride I mostly keep an eye on the usual suspects: power, heart rate, cadence and their averages.  I like to track KJ in addition to ride time week-to-week to measure training volume.

What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

TaleSpin – they had a sweet airplane.

List five things you would want on a deserted island.

  • road bike
  • mountain bike
  • cyclocross bike
  • a track bike (who knows, there may be a velodrome on this island!)
  • ultra high vacuum chamber with FTIR and XPS so I can keep making progress on my research

What was the last song that you sung along to?

Every song when I'm in my car… well, when I'm alone in my car at least.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

My teammates leading the entire Western Collegiate Cycling Conference in singing happy birthday to me at our conference championship criterium this year. Much appreciated but embarrassing nonetheless!

What is your guilty pleasure?

Snowboarding (…or splitboarding to be exact).  How is snowboarding a guilty pleasure?  Because the season for gliding atop deep, fluffy powder coincides with the base training season for collegiate cycling!  I try to justify a few weekends per year spent on the snow by saying that it counts as training – altitude training at that – if you're hiking for the turns in the backcountry rather than riding lifts.

What are you doing when you are not riding?

Eating, sleeping, eating some more and working on my Ph.D. in chemical engineering.  I'm not sure if the Ph.D. is an excuse to put off joining the real world or an excuse to keep racing bikes in the collegiate circuit.  Either way it's a lot of fun, and, to be honest, I truly enjoy the challenge that my research presents.

What is your favorite post-event meal?

Chocolate milk right after the finish line, and then find the best local taqueria.  Nothing is quite as good at filling the post-race caloric deficit as a generously portioned burrito.

What is your greatest achievement in your sport?

Winning the Men's B conference championship road race last season was a highlight, but I'm most proud of the work I've done this year to help my team qualify for collegiate nationals and earn a spot on the team that will represent Stanford.  I'm looking forward to helping my teammates fight for a stars and stripes jersey!

What was your first bike?

I probably started with some hand-me-downs from my brothers when I was a kid, but my first real bike was a custom steel Franklin that my grandfather lent me.  Loved the six-speed Campagnolo components with down-tube shifters!
