Trevor was a competitive ski racer until he was 16, then was a competitive road cyclist until he was 20. He began his pro career as a professional triathlete in 2009. Trevor has several top 10 finishes in both 70.3 and full Ironman distances, and recently won Ironman New Orleans 70.3. He lives on the road with his wife Heather Wurtele, who is also a professional triathlete.

Training and Racing

What are you pre-event rituals?

Nothing fancy: stay relaxed and make sure everything is ready for a smooth day.

Any race day or training superstitions?

None at all!!

What are your must-haves on race day?

For Ironman: My CycleOps power meter to make sure I don’t blow myself up on the bike. A good nutrition plan.

What is your favorite pre-event meal?

Dinner: Mashed yams/potatoes, side of fish, avocado

What is your favorite post-event meal?

Anything with French Fries

What is your greatest achievement/proudest moment in your sport?

Breaking 8 hr 25 min and running a 2:51 Ironman marathon last year.

What is your favorite race?

Ironman Canada

Desire to win an Ironman

What memories do you have of learning to ride a bike?

My first road bike was a Peugot, though I quickly upgraded to a Pinarello. Aboard which I rode with my dad from Vernon, BC to Vancouver,BC....he was on the crappy Peugot.

My first Mtn Bike was a Univega. Thankfully I now have great bikes in Blue Competition Cycles.

Any pets?

We have a cat that travels with us in our RV. She’s awesome, loves to go on adventures at new camp spots and always comes back.

What is something you always have in your refrigerator?

Almond Milk.

Favorite condiment?

Peanut Butter

What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?

Once training is done...lie around and watch a movie with coffee in hand.

What is on your training playlist?

Santigold, Offspring, Black Keys, Rage against the machine, White stripes

What is your guilty pleasure?

A second coffee at some point in the day. Ice cream!

What do you do when you’re not training?

Email, movies, website stuff,

What did you want to be when you grew up?

Formula 1 race car driver when I was really young. Then aspired to be a downhills ski racer.

Training with Power

What are your goals for 2012?

Win a 70.3 or an Ironman

What CycleOps products do you use?

In the winter I use the PowerBeam Pro quite extensively, even on nice warm dry days. It’s great for specific max effort intervals. On the road and in racing I use the Joule 2.0 and CycleOps power hubs.

What are your most important power training metrics?

Average Watts and current watts. Those are about the only values I look at when doing any sort of interval or long ride...aside from time.

What is your favorite power-based workout?

5-10min hill repeats.

On May, 5, 2012, Jesse Thomas won the Wildflower Triathlon for the second consecutive year. Linsey Corbin placed second and Paul Matthews, Trevor Wurtele, and Melanie McQuiad all for stong, top 10 finishes.

During the 2012 Ironman New Orleans 70.3 on Sunday, April 21, Trevor Wurtele won the Men's division and Sarah Piampiano won the Women's with Heather Wurtele close behind in second. Due to harsh weather conditions, the event was a duathlon with a two-mile run replacing the swim.
