Training and Racing

What are your most important power training metrics?

I would have to say that the Power Tap has most helped with my ability to peg the right effort on down hills. For too long I only excelled at climbing or pushing into the wind, but with little resistance, I struggled to know the proper effort. Now I know just how hard I need to work, while riding in my weakest set of terrain, the down hills.

What are your goals for 2010?

Winning an Ironman is at the top of my list of goals for 2010. I raced well at the 70.3 distance in 09, but had a rough go in Kona. I will return to Hawaii with my A game, and I’ll be in the mix.

What are you pre-event rituals?

They tend to change from year to year. I will normally latch onto one or two rituals, but nothing fancy: normally it involves eating a special treat the night before. A nutter butter cookie, a reese’s pb cub, or m&m’s.

What is your favorite pre-event meal?

Race morning I like to have one of two combos: either a large smoothie with Ultragen, banana, berries, and almond milk, or oatmeal and two pieces of almond butter toast. And coffee or a scoop of Pre Race.

What is your favorite post-event meal?

Hamburger and French Fries, with a Beer or a Milkshake, depending on the race!

What is your greatest achievement/proudest moment in your sport?

Being the most consistent American Ironman for several years: three top tens at Kona, three US titles, two IM wins, multiple podiums on the domestic Ironman circuit. I put myself out there and race consistently well at Ironman in the US.

What is your favorite race?

For Ironman it’s Kona: the competition, the vibe, the venue, the history are hard to beat! For 70.3 it’s St. Croix and Pucon, a dead heat tie: best venue, most fun, best local support!

For Fun

What was your favorite cartoon growing up?

I was a big Tom & Jerry fan. My favorite episodes were when they ended up being friends. (Like cats and dogs living together!)

What is your favorite training song?

50 Cent: If I Can’t Do It. Or anything by Led Zeppelin.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Ice Cream or Gelato. Bring it on!

What do you do when you’re not training?

I spend a lot of time with my wife and dogs. We love to take hikes together. Or if we are indoors, we enjoy setting up in front of the TV or at the movies. I also really love to read a good book.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I was torn between being a Milkman and an Architect.
